A couple of recommendation for the care of a student device at school:

The administration block has a School Locker Hire Agreement Form where for $30 a year or $10 per term they can safely store their device during lunch breaks or sport lessons.
When purchasing a device add accidental damage cover.
Check your household contents insurance policy to see if it can be extended to cover accidental damage cover for the device outside of the home
Purchase a hard cover to protect the device in the event that someone stands on the student’s bag.
