From the 16 to 18 October 2013, ten Year 9 students, two Year 10 students, Mr Dunwell, Roy Devine/ Allan (SU Qld) and myself ventured west to the Brisbane River for our canoe camp.
SU Qld’s Connect is a leadership and early intervention program for youth, providing a number of adventure based camps to help young teenagers develop positive attitudes, improved self-esteem and essential life skills.
It was great to welcome the 4 new students on this camp and they more than kept up with our previous Connect students. The challenge of this camp was definitely the 40km+ of paddling required over 2 days. It culminated in paddling into the wind for 2kms on the appropriately nicknamed, 'Persistence Straight'. There's something about wind blowing into your face that plays havoc with your mental strength! This was a great lesson for our boys to learn.
A special mention goes to the group's 'fisherman' who caught catfish, massive eels and even a turtle!
