It was a somewhat chilly morning when 48 students from Years 10, 11 and 12, Miss Griffiths and Ms Stewart met at Loganlea Station for a day in Brisbane’s cultural precinct. Much chatter and laughter ensued as we anticipated our arrival at South Brisbane Train Station.
First stop; The Queensland State Library.
We were greeted by the friendly expert staff of the Library, who safely stowed our bags and directed us through the 5 levels of reference books, lounge and conference rooms and quiet reading areas with spectacular views of the river and Brisbane City. Students were in awe of the services offered by the Library and now as new members they will be able to freely use this space for assignments and study get - togethers at their convenience. They are also able to access PDF texts from our school, a bonus resource for those interested in utilising this service.
After an overwhelming tour of the Library students had free time to explore the Southbank Cultural Precinct, get some lunch and enjoy the sunshine, relaxing in one of the many lush gardens or creative nooks overlooking the river before dividing up and visiting either GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) or the Queensland Museum and Science Works.
MUSEUM: from all accounts the current exhibitions at the Museum were fun and interactive, with students exploring Queensland collectables from all over the state. Hundreds of collected curios were examined and enjoyed by students and Ms Griffiths who took themselves on a self- paced tour. GOMA: Unfortunately this unique space is between exhibitions at the moment, but our students still made good use of their time, exploring the many levels and pondering the unique Indigenous art coveting the walls and floors of the space. They then made their way to the Art Gallery across the courtyard where great works of Australian and European art call home.
All in all it was an informative and exciting excursion with many tired students and teachers sitting and chatting quietly on our return journey. Huge thanks to Miss Griffiths for organising the excursion and to the students who represented our school so well and with pride.
