Dear Parents and Carers
This month, we have reached that part of the school year where we celebrate the many successes enjoyed by our students, our staff and the wider school community. Last week, at our Sports Awards Breakfast, we acknowledged the many achievements of our sports men and women throughout 2012. Our guest speaker, Australian Women’s Rugby Union Player Shannon Parry, spoke of her own journey of success and sacrifices made to reach her personal goals. Ms Parry congratulated our award winners not only for their individual sporting success but also for the qualities and attributes that will set them in good stead for life in general.
Last night, our annual Arts Expo Night showcased not only our performing arts talent but also our visual arts student work for 2012. The standard of student work was exceptional and is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our fantastic team of Arts staff who spend hours and hours of time outside of school preparing the students, rehearsing, making costumes and planning the lighting and sound for the event.
On Wednesday the 7th of November we will celebrate our Annual Awards Night and the academic, cultural and citizenship achievements of our students throughout 2012. The 2013 student leadership team will be announced and several of our excellent student performances will be featured. I encourage as many parents and community partners to attend and celebrate with us.
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be held on Friday 9th November to commemorate this important occasion. As always we are proud to conduct this ceremony in remembrance of our fallen soldiers and share the occasion with members of our local community. Parents are also welcome to attend this assembly.
In two week’s time we will be farewelling our Class of 2012. Our year 12s are looking forward to celebrating the end of 12 years of secondary schooling with their Formal on the 12th of November and Graduation Assembly on Friday 16 November.
I look forward to celebrating these occasions with you all over the next few weeks.

On Thursday 1st of November the Arts department celebrated in 'Gangnam Style' with our annual Arts Expo. We had performances from music, dance and drama, films by the Film and Television and Media students and a gallery of art work for the visual art students. A big effort from some students who performed in 15 acts throughout the night! This will be the last chance to perform for some of Year 12 students and it was definitely a professional and entertaining night. Congratulations students!

Progress Report for our Chaplaincy Service 2012
We have been very fortunate to have had a Chaplain as part of the school support team for ten years. Currently we are endeavouring to employ a Chaplain and have everything in place for the start of the 2013 school year.
In 2011 there was a change to National School Chaplaincy Program (N S C P) with regard to the use of federal funds allowing schools to have a Chaplain or a Student Welfare Worker.
Each year we have to complete a mandatory report with regard to the use of the N S C P funding and provide our community with the following information about our chaplaincy service.

Loganlea Chaplaincy Committee
On the 16th of September, a group of Loganlea State High School year 10 students, as well as our Red Collar Rescue mascot for the day - dog/bee ‘Candy’ attended the Logan Music Festival at Windaroo State School. Students showed their ingenuity and entrepreneurial skills, dressing up to attract visitors to our chocolate toss stall, raising money and awareness for the school. A great day was had by all, enjoying the constant stream of local musical talent playing at various venues around Windaroo’s grounds. Thanks to the support of the community Loganlea managed to raise over $200 for our Show Team.
On the 14th of November a Sunrise Partial Solar Eclipse can be seen in Logan. A Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and obscures at least part of the Sun. If you are lucky enough to be in Cairns you will see a Total Solar Eclipse. In Logan the eclipse will start at 5:56am, with a maximum of 83% of the Sun covered at 6:54 am and finish at 7:59 am. For most of us this is a once in a lifetime event with the next Sunrise Total Solar Eclipse occurring in 2066.
To safely observe the eclipse you will need ‘solar eclipse glasses’ as it is dangerous to look directly at the sun without eye protection. It is possible to suffer serious and permanent eye damage by looking at a solar eclipse, without solar eclipse glasses, even for a short time.
At Loganlea State High School we will be viewing the eclipse from the deck of our Trade-Training Centre. Please feel free to join us on the deck from 6:30am or enjoy the show from your own back yard. Solar eclipse glasses will be available for hire on the day for $2. Come along and enjoy one of the most spectacular events a person can observe. School Based Youth Health Nurse News
Mental Health Week is held between the 9th to the 15th of October this year.
It is an annual national awareness event held every year to coincide with World Mental Health Day, which is held on the 10th of October each year.
Mental Health Week aims to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and well being in the wider community.
This year we held a Mental Health Week Expo again for students in Year 8, 9 and 12 on the 15th of October. 11 community government and non-government agencies come to the school for the expo including Alcohol, Tobacco and other drugs (ATODS), 13QUIT, Carers Australia, Relationships Australia, Youth and Family Services, Helping out families, Centre Against Sexual Violence, Relationships Australia and Child and Youth Mental Health. Below are some photographs taken on the day of the youth health nurse staff and Helping out Families staff who attended.
The expo aimed to increase students’ knowledge of what mental health means, how to promote good mental health and support services in the community and the services they provide.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) “Mental health is a state of well being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities and can cope with the normal stresses of work.”
Enjoying mental health means having a sense of wellbeing, being able to function during everyday life and feeling confident to rise to a challenge when the opportunity arises. Just like your physical health, there are actions you can take to increase your mental health. Boost your wellbeing and stay mentally healthy by following a few simple steps: (Source: Better Health Channel)
1. Connect with others. Develop and maintain strong relationships with people around you who will support and enrich your life. The quality of our personal relationships has a great effect on our wellbeing. Putting time and effort into building strong relationships can bring great rewards.
2. Take time to enjoy. Set aside time for activities, hobbies and projects you enjoy. Let yourself be spontaneous and creative when the urge takes you. Do a crossword; take a walk in your local park; read a book; sew a quilt; draw pictures with your kids; play with your pets – whatever takes your fancy.
3. Participate and share interests. Join a club or group of people who share your interests. Being part of a group of people with a common interest provides a sense of belonging and is good for your mental health. Join a sports club; a band; an evening walking group; a dance class; a theatre or choir group; a book or car club.
4. Contribute to your community. Volunteer your time for a cause or issue that you care about. Help out a neighbour, work in a community garden or do something nice for a friend. There are many great ways to contribute that can help you feel good about yourself and your place in the world. An effort to improve the lives of others is sure to improve your life too.
5. Take care of yourself. Be active and eat well – these help maintain a healthy body. Physical and mental health are closely linked; it’s easier to feel good about life if your body feels good. You don’t have to go to the gym to exercise – gardening, vacuuming, dancing and bushwalking all count. Combine physical activity with a balanced diet to nourish your body and mind and keep you feeling good, inside and out.
6. Learn a new skill or take on a challenge to meet a goal. You could take on something different at work; commit to a fitness goal or learn to cook a new recipe. Learning improves your mental fitness, while striving to meet your own goals builds skills and confidence and gives you a sense of progress and achievement.
7. Deal with stress. Be aware of what triggers your stress and how you react. You may be able to avoid some of the triggers and learn to prepare for or manage others. Stress is a part of life and affects people in different ways. It only becomes a problem when it makes you feel uncomfortable or distressed. A balanced lifestyle can help you manage stress better. If you have trouble winding down, you may find that relaxation breathing, yoga or meditation can help.
8. Rest and refresh. Get plenty of sleep. Go to bed at a regular time each day and practice good habits to get better sleep. Sleep restores both your mind and body. However, feelings of fatigue can still set in if you feel constantly rushed and overwhelmed when you are awake. Allow yourself some unfocussed time each day to refresh; for example, let your mind wander, daydream or simply watch the clouds go by for a while. It’s OK to add ‘do nothing’ to your to-do list!
9. Notice the here and now. Take a moment to notice each of your senses each day. Simply ‘be’ in the moment – feel the sun and wind on your face and notice the air you are breathing. It’s easy to be caught up thinking about the past or planning for the future instead of experiencing the present. Practising mindfulness, by focusing your attention on being in the moment, is a good way to do this. Making a conscious effort to be aware of your inner and outer world is important for your mental health.
10. Ask for help. This can be as simple as asking a friend to babysit while you have some time out or speaking to your doctor (GP) about where to find a counsellor or community mental health service. The perfect, worry-free life does not exist. Everyone’s life journey has bumpy bits and the people around you can help. If you don’t get the help you need first off, keep asking until you do.
