From the 22nd to 24th of May, nine Year 9 students, two Year 10 students, Mr Dunwell, Roy Devine (SU Qld), two other volunteers and myself ventured north to Rainbow Beach for our first Connect camp of the year.
SU Qld’s Connect is a leadership and early intervention program for youth, providing a number of adventure based camps to help young teenagers develop positive attitudes, improved self-esteem and essential life skills.
Sleeping on the banks of Rainbow Beach was quite cold but as a group we enjoyed lots of fun times. The students were tested in their ability to work as a group and ended the week with good enough results for a free Maccas lunch.
Some of the activities we enjoyed doing were: fishing, running down sand dunes, cooking over a camp fire, canoeing, night games including spotlight and sleeping under the stars.
A couple of special mentions go out to Roy (for creating the program and still running it with passion many years later), Mr Dunwell (for being Loganlea's custodian of the program and showing genuine care for the participants) and our chaplaincy committee and school community (for continuing to value the program).
